The origins of osteopathy
–
Andrew Taylor Still, known as the founder of osteopathy, first studied medicine and was particularly interested in anatomy. By the 1870s, he had become interested in bonesetting, a form of manipulation used to treat orthopedic conditions.
In 1892, he founded the American School of Osteopathy, marked by some key notions defended by some of his contemporaries (Davis, Babbitt, Evans, etc.), in particular this concept of health defined as the harmonious interaction between the parts of the body and a fluid circulating there without obstruction. He affirmed the unity of the organism and its self-healing capacities, the links between structure and function and developed structural, manipulative techniques (most of which are now obsolete) which made it possible to resolve suffering by rebalancing joint disorders.
